As an education-first technology supplier with over 20 years of expertise in delivering quality teaching and learning solutions across the globe, accessibility is a key area of focus here at LearningMate. The European Accessibility Act will come into effect in June 2025, and suppliers and educational institutions will need to ensure a level of accessibility compliance of their learning environments.
The European Accessibility Act 2025 is seen as a transformative directive and a call to action to be more inclusive. With companies and institutions across sectors having until 28 June 2025 to comply and the lead in time of just under a year, forward planning and preparation is of essence.
Our Five Step Accessibility Checklist
* Evaluate your content and technology offering and create a holistic plan of what you need to do to achieve your goals – this doesn’t need to be the finished article but more sets out a vision of where you want to be.
* Note, achieving perfect and high standards of digital accessibility can be a journey and therefore, aim for smaller progressive milestones vs. trying to aim for perfection and keep building upon this.
* It can be so overwhelming to think about the overhauling needing to be done and thinking where to start is often a challenge. Don’t go it alone and enlist the support of experts in this space to guide your thinking – they can recommend the path you go on and can also take on some of the work.
* Create internal steering committees to work on these initiatives and to drive their adoption within the business.
* Remember, the why – wouldn’t it be incredible for everyone to be able to experience online in the same way as one another, e.g. every learner to see, read and hear learning content in the same way? Keeping this all-important message in mind helps remove all the noise that can be associated with the fears of the unknown or feeling overwhelmed at the ask!
